Interlude: More Musings on the Price of Eggs and Egg Substitutes
A few years ago, I made some infographics to share with you, reflecting on whether eggs or egg substitutes were cheaper. It was the kind of analysis I sometimes want to do.
I'm revisiting that now, to see if anything has changed, other than everything seeming to be inordinately more expensive.
Nearly everything did increase in price, though, in a way that made me feel vaguely doomed, while at the same time, I noticed that the plant foods weren't going up in price as much as eggs were. JUST Egg is about 27 cents more now (which is very annoying), but chicken eggs are 29 cents more now.
And I'll also note, as I did last time I did this, that I wasn't one to buy the absolute cheapest eggs. I bought higher quality eggs, which are getting especially pricey. So I guess what this analysis tells me, just as it did before, is that on the whole my food is cheaper than it would be if I hadn't become a vegan.
That's not to say that's the reason I'm vegan, or anything like that, but I do find it interesting.
thanks for this. It is so informative. but yeah the way prices are going up is scary though as you pointed out going whole food is still a cheaper way to go. Plus so much better for other reasons as well
ReplyDeleteEssentially, if you want eggs as eggs--scrambled, etc.--those are more expensive in vegan versions. Scrambled tofu, JUST Egg, etc. are usually pricier than chicken eggs. But for baking and in cases where the egg is a binder, like meatballs, the other options are a lot cheaper. I still have JUST Egg occasionally, but ultimately I know I spend less on "eggs" than an omnivore would.
