Sequestration Meal #219

Today, Americans got a new president, after what felt like the longest four years of my life. (I mean, I assume so. These posts are scheduled in advance. But who knows anymore.) This last year was like twenty. So in honor of that, a somewhat fancy bento in a small casserole dish:

Steamed rice, stir-fried broccoli stems (from this recipe), orange "chicken" (soy curls) from Soul in the Raw's recipe, and some quick-pickled cucumber slices with halves of grape tomato.

Broccoli stems are so unappreciated. And now that if I buy broccoli I get much more of it than I would otherwise, I end up with a lot of broccoli stems. They aren't quite so beautiful as broccoli florets, and I should probably eat them together like most people would, but they were really good this way.

This soy curls recipe was quite different than most I've used--they're simmered in the sauce rather than sautéed, so they're most softer--but they were good. The orange flavor was very strong, though, and I might cut the orange juice with half water if I made this again.

I may take a break for a day or two; I'm feeling a lot of things. But rest assured I'll be back soon if I can; there are far too many wonderful things to eat out there.

  1. Beautiful meal, I’m sad that you didn’t get to eat it today. This was the most happy, inspirational and confident day that I’ve experienced in 4 years. Cooked/baked a lot today. Was nice to do it for a celebration! It’s been too long.

    1. I ate well today; I'll just be taking a break from posting what I ate for a bit (probably until Monday). I felt better yesterday than I had since the election was called, and it feels more real now. Things are still terrible but I think we have a better chance of getting on our feet again now.

    1. Aren't they? I like to have them separate from the florets so I can appreciate them for being their own thing.

  3. This looks so good, especially served in the little casserole dish!
