A Review of New Things I've Tried #27 (Breads Edition)

It should be easier than it often is to get vegan bread ready-made, but if you read your labels it should be fine.  I love to bake my own bread, but life doesn't always let me, so here are some things I've tried recently.

1. Trader Joe's British-Style Crumpets

I will first say that I have never had a crumpet other than these, so this is not a review relative to all other crumpets, but I really loved these toasted with a bit of plant butter spread over them! They get crispy outside and stay soft inside. I neglected to take this photo until I'd eaten one (perils of my pandemic brain's memory, alas), but you can just imagine me enthusiastically tearing into the package because of my love for crumpets.

2. Arnold Healthy Multi-Grain Bread

I'd already taken out a couple of slices before I remembered to snap a photo of this one, too, but that's less obvious! I'm on a new quest to make some gentle dietary swaps to improve certain aspects of my nutrition, so I've been trying out different kinds of bread. This one was pretty good! I'm not sure what I think about all the seeds on top, but I usually don't mind them. I wouldn't make tea sandwiches with this or anything but it's fine for toast. I'm finding my bread explorations more fun than I thought they might be, too! I think it's pretty silly to call a bread "healthy" on the label, because we all need different things for our health, but I'll overlook the name.

3. Trader Joe's Rustico Bread

This bread doesn't check off as many boxes in the "healthy" department as the Arnold's bread did, but I guess that was a trade off for keeping it soft. This bread had the bonus of not looking totally uniform, so the sandwiches I made with it had a more artisanal appearance. This wasn't nutritionally different enough for me to want to choose it over white bread, though, so I'd probably stick with Arnold's over this in the future.

  1. Thankfully, we have a lot of vegan bread options here, especially in the supermarket. You are more likely to run into issues at smaller bakeries, which often put milk or bread in there. But we have loads of bread options, including english muffins and crumpets! I love crumpets, especially in winter. I put Nuttelex and golden syrup on them, or peanut butter and jam, or Nuttelex and vegemite because don't discount a savoury crumpet option.

    1. Ah! Vegemite I don't have, but there is some Marmite in the cupboard.

It's not challenging to find bread full stop, but it's very easy to find non-vegan bread, with the milk, whey, and honey in a lot of them! I've gotten exasperated on the bread aisle more than once.

  2. The Killer Dave's bread and english muffins are good if you have that brand but definitely pricey. Healthier and vegan.

    1. I've seen those and I've been looking forward to trying them, but yes, they look like an investment!

  3. Same label and all except for the name, Arnold’s is Orowheat here in the Midwest- Great Plains. Their bread is delicious! If there’s an Aldi near you, they make a Dave’s killer bread knock-off for 1/3 less.

    1. Good to know! I rarely go to Aldi because it feels so crowded with people all the time, but that might be a good reason to pop in.
