Sequestration Meal #110

Veggie Rose has a recipe for vegan steak I'd wanted to try for a very long time, but I didn't anticipate how hard it would be to photograph melting butter (Earth Balance)! I think food bloggers must take pictures of cooled-down steaks if they have a pat of butter on them.

Anyway. I had it with mashed potatoes and broccoli. The flavor of the steak is really great, but the texture was a bit too chewy for me. I have always struggled with making my own seitan. I think I need a food processor.

In other news, Blogger has finally forced me into using the new interface. It's frustrating--things that used to take one click now take two. If this post looks weird, well, I have them to blame! It does default to larger images, which could be nice. I don't know. I always have a hard time adjusting to new things.

  1. Maybe if you froze your butter pat solid, it'd give you more time before melting? (although then it'd also chill the steak more. Sigh.)

Oh, I've got it: a corrugated cardboard insulative layer between the butter pat and the steak, when doing top-down photos. Just... don't eat it unless you want extra fiber.

(I don't know how food bloggers who then *eat* their food do it, but there are... a lot... of tricks for those who style food for sales/packages. Marbles in soup to shove the "stuff" to the top! Things that are definitely not ice cream standing in for ice cream! Etc.)

    1. There is also vegan butter that melts a lot less nicely. Blue Bonnet is practically un-meltable. (And also not really edible.)

  2. I hate the new blogger interface. Adding labels to posts takes forever now, and it just looks so clunky. It was perfect before!

I did a food styling workshop once and the tricks they use are mindblowing and not conducive to eating your food while hot.

    1. I ended up finding a way to switch back. It was too annoying to me. If I have to use it I will; if not I won't. I think enough people complained for them to retain the old one a bit longer.

  3. I actually think the melting butter is a nice touch in your picture; it was the first thing that caught my eye!
Ugh, the new Blogger is beyond terrible; I reverted to the legacy Blogger in order to do my post today because it was literally impossible to get things to look right with the new version.

    1. If they insist on changing things I hope they accept the feedback. It used to say the old interface was going away August 24; it no longer says that so maybe they're listening.
