Sequestration Meal #155

I recently had a chat with myself about my tendency to not use stuff out of fear I wouldn't be able to get it again. So I went all out here with stuff I figured I'll not be seeing again until I get myself out of isolation: Vegan beefless stroganoff made with Gardein beefless tips, mushrooms, and Tofutti sour cream over Light N' Fluffy macaroni dumplings. It was a comfort in more than one way; something about putting the idea of not getting the beefless tips or macaroni dumplings again for a long while to rest freed me. Once I'd cooked this, I would no longer run across it in my freezer or pantry and be reminded. I could open up my world to new things.

So here's to new adventures. I know I can make stroganoff with soy curls and pappardelle will probably stand in for these noodles. Sour cream can be made with cashews. We sometimes have to embrace the unknown. And the thing is, as nice as this was to eat, it wasn't the best meal I've had in isolation by far. I have had a lot of other things I enjoyed more. They may not be as easy to prepare for me yet because unlike this they aren't second nature, but some of them will be in time.

Cheers to all of you braving this new world with me.

  1. I completely understand. I like that this wasn’t even one of your better meals because it brings with it closure that frees you. No more worry about if/when you’ll have it again. No wondering if you really enjoyed it like you should have. You lived in the moment and the moment has past. Today’s post made me feel very zen :)

  2. I resonate with this so much. Particularly when I used to bring things home from the US, and then would hoard them for so long because I didn't know if I would ever get them again. It took some time and really challenging myself to start to get over that. And then I can enjoy them before they end up covered in freezer burn or go stale! I still need to remind myself of this.

  4. I’ve been reading your blog for a long time but I’m not sure if I’ve ever commented before. I had to tell you I can relate to not using things because I’m afraid I won’t be able to get them again! I’ve always been like this but current times have made it worse. I've been trying to get over this also, especially with things that aren’t good past their expiration date. Thank you for your posts. As others have said, reading vegan blogs is one of the main ways I stay connected.

    1. Thanks for commenting! Yes, this is definitely worse during these times. I don't like to use anything up, but I'm also not using it when it's sitting there, so what good is that? Having the stuff sitting there is somehow reassuring sometimes but that's irrational. These are hard times. Take care of yourself--and eat your good stuff before it goes bad!
