Review: Clever Fox Confections

 

I am not much into Halloween, but I used to have a favorite Halloween candy. I kept hoping some big brand would veganize it--after all, a lot of the brands are almost vegan as it is. And so for most of a decade at least, I have been without candy corn and mellowcreme pumpkins.

This year, I finally decided I was going to change that, and I was going to be brave and order from a super small company: Clever Fox Confections.

They only do mellowcreme pumpkins and candy corn. They do not do them in the perfectly uniform manner of a factory. They only do them in specific seasons, and only accept orders at very specific times. I had to set my calendar to go order these things at 9:00PM on a Sunday, and then they were shipped the next week. Because they are such a small company, they do not have any sort of shipping discounts. If I wanted to have a bit of my favorite Halloween candy, my little box of 10 mellowcreme pumpkins and bin of 20 candy corn pieces was going to run me $34 or so.

But they were vegan. And they were the only option, if I wanted them. And I figured that what I wanted was more related to an experience than vast quantities.

So I bought them and waited. And they came! And despite not being exactly what I might remember--maybe a bit more chewy, perhaps--they were also somehow delicious. I wished I could have had more of them, but I'm not made of money.

It seems like Clever Fox Confections may also make Christmas candy corn (i.e., the red and green kind). If that interests you and you're like me and dream in mellowcreme flavors, mark your calendars! I know I'll keep looking.
