Recipe: Orange Cream of Rice (Vegan, Gluten Free)

If ever you're in the mood for a bright, citrus-infused breakfast, I have an option for you: orange cream of rice. This would be lovely with a little splash of non-dairy creamer, too, for a creamsicle-style breakfast.

Though I've scoured the internet for cream of rice recipes, I seem to be the main fan of it at the moment, so there aren't many. I have so many ideas, though! I look forward to sharing more of them with you as time goes on.

Orange Cream of Rice
Serves: 1

1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons orange juice
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons water
Dash of salt
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/4 cup cream of rice
Orange slices or orange compote, for garnish (optional)
Non-dairy creamer, if desired

Bring orange juice, water, salt, and brown sugar to a boil in a small saucepan. While whisking constantly, add cream of rice gradually in a steady stream. Cook for about 30 seconds or until thickened. Remove from heat, cover, and let stand 1 minute.

To serve, put the cream of rice in a bowl and top with orange slices or orange compote. Add a splash of non-dairy creamer, if desired.

  1. Oh this sounds lovely, especially as it is a good time for oranges here and they keep well for a while, so I have been buying them in our weekly deliveries. Though I don't know that I have ever seen cream of rice here... I will have to investigate!

    1. I hope you find some! It's a bit like rice pudding, but with the consistency of a soft polenta.
